Neste artigo, versaremos sobre o contexto da introdução dos animais zebuínos nas fazendas brasileiras entre 1897 e 1930, focalizando a atuação social e política dos pecuaristas. Dentre os temas abordados estão os debates em torno das "melhores" raças de gado para povoar o Brasil, os subsídios do Estado para as importações dos touros e matrizes, a realização das primeiras exposições pecuárias ocorridas no Rio de Janeiro, em São Paulo e Minas Gerais, as primeiras associações de classe e os órgãos governamentais criados em defesa dos interesses dos fazendeiros. Serão também enfatizados aspectos dos argumentos zootécnicos escolhidos para alimentar ou criticar a "guerra contra o zebu" protagonizada por agrônomos ligados aos setores pecuaristas. Este artigo tem o intuito final de agregar elementos de análise e elucidar a dimensão conflitiva dos primórdios da chamada "modernização rural" brasileira. Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
