Description
Summary:This article deals with different modes of convergence between the other world and the material world in the municipality of Caldas (MG). From my experience with the local population, I realized that the multiple forms of interaction between these worlds are woven into everyday life and are part of the same symbolic system, popular Catholicism. In this sense, several practices emerge that go beyond the limits of official doctrine and are not understood by people as deviations, such as blessings or divination. There are also certain agents who manifest themselves daily, such as saints, the Devil and ghosts. In this way, the proposed methodological path follows a presentation of the place, the discussion of popular Catholicism and, finally, an outline of two categories of this symbolic system, hauntings and blessings. For the outline of this work, I proposed to analyze, within this symbolic system, hauntings and blessings as emblematic categories of local popular Catholicism. Regarding the methods, I tried to use participant observation as a way of collecting relevant ethnographic data, combined with oral history, which made it possible to prepare and analyze interviews with local residents.
