Description
Summary:Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira (1928-2006) was an important Brazilian anthropologist who worked in different universities and institutions in the Brazil and abroad. Although much of his curriculum and research is widely known in the history of Brazilian anthropology, his documentary collection has been relatively unexplored. The Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira fund, currently deposited at the Arquivo Edgard Leuenroth (AEL), located at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), and donated by the anthropologist in the 1980s, contains a large volume of documents that cover a significant portion of his life’s word, as well as many chapters in the history of the discipline in Brazil. This article aims to examine this material in relation to the discussions that connect anthropology and archives, with the objective of accessing the layers of action that build the narrative arising from these roles and that articulate titleholder and memory institutions. To accomplish this, a brief exploration of a debate that problematizes the monumentality and the supposed neutrality of archives, along with an examination of the potentialities and particularities of the personal archives, will help us to analyse the material in light of the construction of a legacy and a memory that permeate individual action, while also being the result of archiving and research processes.
