Description
Summary:The article analyzes the configuration of the labor market in the state of Rio Grande do Sul from 2012 to 2020. The theoretical foundation is the Marxist Theory of Dependency, which advocates the dependence of underdeveloped countries on movements of the International Division of Labor commanded by countries at the heart of capitalism. The period in question is characterized by the Brazilian State submitting to a fiscal logic, retreating from its commitment to make public investments and encourage private investment. Furthermore, the period also includes the first year of the covid-19 pandemic. In the labor market, the number of formal jobs was reduced, and unemployment and underuse rose due to insufficient hours worked. The state of Rio Grande do Sul suffered a significant drop in GDP and lost relative position in the South of the country. The article uses secondary data produced by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, notably the Continuous National Household Sample Survey.
