Description
Summary:This article presents an overview of economic development in Bahia with the aim of investigating how regional inequalities between municipalities affect the state's labor market. Data from the Superintendence of Socioeconomic Studies of Bahia and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics are used to analyse the industrialization process, the loss of dynamism of the Bahian economy in the recent period and the transformations in the labour market. It can be seen that the development policies adopted in recent decades have concentrated (spatially and sectorally) the Gross Domestic Product, mainly in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador. A major challenge for the state government in this area is to promote a path of integrated economic growth that includes all 417 municipalities. It should be borne in mind that the persistent economic and social heterogeneity makes it difficult to tackle the structural problems of the labor market in Bahia.
