| Summary: | Written in Bern, Switzerland, by Clarice Lispector, the romance A cidade sitiada (1949) com-ment and gives meaning to certain aspects of the Brazilian modernization. Its narrative intertwines the tortuous and ambiguous passage of S. Geral-do from suburb to metropolis with changes in the lives of the protagonist, Lucrécia Neves, and the men with whom she relates: Felipe, Perseu, Mateus Correia e Lucas. By focusing on this interlacing, the author reflects on and stages the formation of a new social order and the resulting gender conflicts. Conflicts that bring Lucrecia Neves closer to other characters and the author’s own experience, illumi-nating transformations in the ways of being in the city and in the ideals of domesticity between the years 1940 and 1960. |
