Description
Summary:In this article, we analyze historical and social constraints on the militant activity of foreign clerics who worked in the State of Maranhão during the 1970s and 1980s. Fundamentally inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's analytical model, we examine the social properties, cultural resources and positions of a collection of agents who occupy prominent positions as authorized spokespersons for “causes” considered legitimate. In this sense, on the one hand, we seek to demonstrate the assets held by the priests covered, the intervention dynamics and the mobilization repertoires triggered. On the other hand, we intend to demonstrate the persistence of amalgamations between social domains¸ mainly religious, political-militants and intellectuals in this regional setting.
