Description
Summary:This article aims to analyze the connection between the exhibitions at the Centro Psiquiátrico Nacional D. Pedro II on the abstract art moviment in Brazil. It is argued that, through the exaltation of the formal aspects in the works of the “alienated” by critic Mário Pedrosa, the production of the residents at Centro Psiquiátrico enjoyed equality compared to any artistic manifestation, encouraging the appreciation of abstractionism. In this way, we seek to comment on Pedrosa's strategy for the consolidation of abstract art in the country, paying attention to the years in which the exhibitions of the residents at the Centro Psiquiátrico Nacional D. Pedro II (1947–1952) took place.
