Description
Summary:This paper seeks to explore the challenges and purpose of establishing, at the dawn of the 21st century, an art collection that results from the rescue of works historically produced by patients in a psychiatric hospital setting. Focusing on the case study of Miguel Bombarda Hospital (1848-2012), the first psychiatric hospital in Portugal, a complex closed in the wake of mental health reforms, parallels are drawn between the history of psychiatric institutional practices and the functions of artistic expression, based on a fragmented archive that has yet to be deciphered. Once understood as a cultural heritage of health, this psychiatric art collection, which serves as an archive, enables the development of new narratives about the psychiatric institution from the subjective experience of the individuals who have been through it.
