O presente artigo procura explorar as dificuldades e o propósito da constituição, no dealbar do séc. XXI, de uma coleção de arte resultante do resgate de obras produzidas historicamente por pacientes em contexto hospitalar psiquiátrico. Centrado no estudo de caso do Hospital Miguel Bombarda (1848-2012), primeiro hospital psiquiátrico em Portugal, um complexo encerrado no seguimento de reformas da saúde mental, estabelecem-se paralelos entre a história das práticas institucionais psiquiátricas e as funções da expressão artística, a partir de um arquivo fragmentado e ainda por decifrar. Uma vez compreendido como patrimônio cultural da saúde, este acervo de arte permite construir novas narrativas sobre a instituição psiquiátrica baseadas no registo da experiência subjetiva dos indivíduos que por ali passaram.
