O edifício emerge como um testemunho vivo das transformações políticas, sociais e culturais que marcaram a história da cidade. Ao longo do tempo enfrentou uma desvalorização sistemática, evidenciada pelo pensamento pejorativo acerca do colonial e que culminou numa reforma descaracterizadora da fachada em 1906. Posteriormente, na década de 1980, a inserção de uma torre agravou as ameaças à sua integridade e estrutura. Enquanto isso, os processos de tombamento, iniciados em 1964 e 2008, representam uma resposta consciente, ainda que tardia, à urgência de preservação. A retomada governamental em 2011 e as reformas de 2022 marcam esforços cruciais para revitalizar esse relevante patrimônio histórico e cultural, destacando a necessidade contínua de proteger e celebrar a rica herança da cidade do Rio de Janeiro.
