Description
Summary:This article aims to recompose the multifaceted picture of artistic modernities emerged in the early 20th century, in Brazilian cultural sphere. To achieve this purpose, the examination of some aspects of the aesthetic and musical project outlined by Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) will be adopted as the main strategy. In this sense, the “afrotropes” – a concept formulated by Huey Copeland – fictionalized by the composer and converted by him into signs of a supposed “musical Brazilianness”, will be contrasted with the context of consolidation of “Little Africa” in Rio, transformed in those years into an epicenter of alternative modernities potentially capable of expanding, beyond the borders of the São Paulo modernism, the debates about artistic modernisms active in the country.
