Intelectuais e partidos políticos de esquerda, nos tempos atuais, têm feito da democracia o principal tema de suas preocupações teóricas e a questão central de sua agenda política. Como observou recentemente um sociólogo inglês, "a esquerda rendeu-se à democracia". Refletindo sobre a cultura pólítica no Ocidente capitalista, P. Hirst conclui que "a esquerda intelectual na Europa e nos EUA adotou a democratização como a essência de suas reivindicações políticas".
