Description
Summary:In this article I discuss the terms that organized the controversies, in the late 1920s, between three key figures of the Latin American left at the time: the Cuban Julio Antonio Mella and the Peruvians Victor Raul Haya de La Torre and José Carlos Mariátegui. I interrogate the uses that they made of marxism, as well as the relationship between these appropriations and the substantive problems they addressed, such as imperialism and the character of the Latin American revolution. I shall seek to demonstrate that, even though opposed in their political diagnosis, Mella and Haya de La Torre shared an understanding of historical materialism as a philosophy of history, diverging on its applicability to the region. As for Mariátegui, in his polemic with his compatriot, he held a different understanding of marxism as a historical method of interpretation, which allowed him to transcend the opposition between universality and particularism. Lastly, I shall review these controversies in the light of different readings of the history of Latin American marxism.
