description In this article, Foster and Clark present their interpretation of the ecological foundations of Karl Marx’s thought, emphasizing his materialist conception of nature (mainly based on the critical natural sciences of his days), and the pivotal role that, according to his scheme, the contradiction between value, nature and work plays both in the accumulation of capital and in the degradation and disruption of natural conditions associated to it. They also lay out, on that occasion, a critical evaluation of an alternative line of interpretation that, despite resorting to the same Marxian vocabulary of “metabolism”, put forward against the idea of “metabolic rift”, a notion of “singular metabolism” that is, as Foster and Clark would argue, social-monist, anti-dialectic and even anti-ecological.
