A compreensão da natureza da formação social soviética por Charles Bettelheim conheceu sensíveis variações no decorrer de sua longa carreira intelectual. Neste texto, nos ocuparemos somente da concepção que ele desenvolveu de modo mais sistemático e rigoroso e que permaneceu vinculada a seu nome: a identificação da União Soviética como uma sociedade capitalista de Estado. Vamos expor, primeiro, o seu conceito de capitalismo de Estado para, depois, mostrar, brevemente, como Bettelheim concebe o processo de implantação desse tipo de capitalismo na história da Revolução Russa.
