O objetivo deste texto é estabelecer um debate com a abordagem de Daniel Aarão Reis, Rodrigo Patto Sá Motta e Marcelo Ridenti contida na obra A ditadura que mudou o Brasil. Busco situar os termos da contenda, partindo de uma discussão sobre a memória empreendida pelo professor da UFF e ex-militante do MR-8, Daniel Aarão, para concluir que a inflexão interpretativa sobre o tema da ditadura da parte deste historiador tem relação com sua mudança de posição em relação ao tema, e não às evidências que surgiram nos últimos anos.
