Este ensaio realiza uma reflexão sobre os textos do intelectual e militante comunista Astrojildo Pereira, especialmente em sua polêmica com Oliveira Vianna. Procura-se mostrar como o antigo dirigente do PCB colocou diante de si o dilema da “nacionalização do marxismo” no Brasil em contato com uma interpretação do país que afirmaria sua particularidade histórica e negaria a validade de teorias universalistas na compreensão de nosso contexto histórico e político. Dessa maneira, os textos posteriores do militante comunista se esforçariam por compreender o país a partir de um ponto de vista marxista, analisando a cultura brasileira e buscando identificar uma cultura progressista no país. Essa cultura progressista, formada pelos radicais em seu contexto ou “céticos voltarianos”, seria a base para o enraizamento do marxismo no Brasil. Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
