Neste texto é proposto um estudo sobre a análise das relações internacionais desenvolvida por Gramsci nos Cadernos do cárcere. Partindo-se do princípio de que o autor raramente utilizou o conceito de imperialismo em seus escritos, a questão central que se coloca é a existência de uma possível incompatibilidade do uso dos conceitos de hegemonia e imperialismo nesta obra. Conclui-se, a partir dessas leituras e da análise adicional dos trabalhos de Gramsci e dos autores neogramscianos, que estes conceitos são complementares e não antagônicos.
