A obra de Cohen, agora publicada pela Editora Unicamp, apareceu em primeira edição em 1978, e em segunda edição ampliada em 2000. A ampliação consistiu na inclusão de uma Introdução à edição de 2000: Reflexões sobre o marxismo analítico, e na adição de quatro novos capítulos, no fim da obra, aos onze capítulos originais. A obra é tida como fundadora de uma corrente – mais propriamente de um grupo de autores – que veio a denominar-se “marxismo analítico”, cujos líderes foram Cohen, John Roemer e Jon Elster. Por esta razão, o livro possui um significado, pelo método e pelo objetivo teórico, tão ou mais importante que o seu objeto, a teoria da história de Marx, ou a versão de Cohen desta teoria. Pode-se dizer que o objeto foi o suporte de um projeto metodológico de reformulação do materialismo histórico com base em princípios teóricos e metodológicos não marxistas.
