Um caminho que, inaugurado na época da II Internacional pela figura atípica de Antonio Labriola, e posteriormente continuado, embora em direções diferentes, por intelectuais heterodoxos como Benedetto Croce e Giovanni Gentile, encontrou seu ponto de chegada no pensamento e na obra de Antonio Gramsci, o qual, de alguma forma, retomou e reelaborou as ideias de seus antecessores.
