Valuable in the book are the problems that Canale raises. From his position as a researcher and at the same time as a communist militant, he is able to understand in depth the history of left-wing militancy. Canale shows, for example, how the labor and union movement acted in this period, deeply divided between two currents: a reformist and a revolutionary, highlighting that the reformist, “yellow” current was always the absolute majority of the movement (p.74). It also indicates that even the so-called socialist and/or workers' parties were a variant of reformism, much more an expression “of radical republican sectors of the petty bourgeoisie who looked to the workers for their electoral parishes” (p.82). |

O livro de Dario Canale, O surgimento da seção brasileira da Internacional Comunista 1917-1928, deve ser saudado como importante contribuição à história do Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCB). Além de vasta bibliografia sobre o assunto, Canale consultou uma grande quantidade de jornais operários e praticamente todos os documentos sobre o PCB e a IC disponíveis em arquivos na época. Valiosos no livro são os problemas que Canale levanta. A partir de sua condição de pesquisador e ao mesmo tempo de militante comunista, ele consegue entender com profundidade a história da militância de esquerda. Canale mostra, por exemplo, como o movimento operário e sindical atuou nesse período profundamente dividido entre duas correntes: uma reformista e uma revolucionária, destacando que a corrente reformista, “amarela”, sempre foi a maioria absoluta do movimento (p.74). Indica também que mesmo os partidos ditos socialistas e/ou operários eram uma variante do reformismo, muito mais uma expressão “de setores republicanos radicais da pequena burguesia que procuravam nos operários suas freguesias eleitorais” (p.82).
