O valor de Marx não se refere primordialmente à importância do pensamento de Marx. No livro, o autor se propõe a apresentar uma interpretação da teoria do valor em Marx, fundamento da análise marxiana do modo de produção capitalista. Alfredo Saad Filho introduz inovações importantes no que ele interpreta como a análise de Marx sobre o capitalismo e a própria teoria do valor, que são descritas mais abaixo. Ressalte-se, contudo, que nem a introdução nem a conclusão do livro permitem uma visão clara do que o livro contém. Elas avançam em terrenos não desenvolvidos no decorrer do texto e ampliam o alcance de seu desenvolvimento, não dando, contudo, uma ideia precisa dos pontos em que o texto avança com relação à já vastíssima bibliografia sobre o tema.
