Hence a fundamental question suddenly arises, which regards the connection between that thesis and the account of the primacy of relation over the elements, on which Althusser insisted in his Sixties' and Seventeen's writings. |

O ensaio considera A corrente subterrânea do materialismo do encontro como o mais importante dos escritos de Althusser nos anos oitenta. O risco subjacente a este texto é considerá-lo como uma afastamento do poderoso racionalismo dos escritos dos anos sessenta em unia filosofia do evento, do acaso, ou, ainda pior, da liberdade. Assim, o desafio está não tanto em negar as ambigüidades em que tais interpretações se baseiam, como em reconhecê-las e trazê-las à luz, procurando resolvê-las por meio de um corte teórico que possibilita colocar no centro do texto de Althusser uma tese não escrita e que, contudo, representa sua pedra de toque: a tese da primazia do encontro sobre a forma. Daí brota uma questão fundamental, que diz respeito à ligação entre tal tese e o relato da primazia da relação sobre os elementos, na qual Althusser insistiu em seus textos dos anos sessenta e setenta.
