O presente artigo é uma investigação preliminar sobre o último período da produção teórica de Marx, que aqui identificaremos com os anos 1871-1883. Período este que se caracteriza por um crescente sofrimento pessoal e o gradativo agravamento de seu estado de saúde que o levou a interromper freqüentemente seus trabalhos teóricos, a fim de realizar repetidas viagens para tratamento médico. Este sofrimento é ainda mais agravado pela doença e morte de sua mulher, Jenny Marx (2/12/1881), seguida, em um curto período de tempo, pela morte de sua filha mais velha, Jenny Longuet (11/01/1883).
