Nas últimas três décadas do século XX houve uma tomada de consciência, a nível mundial, sobre a gravidade dos desequilíbrios ambientais. Mas isso não significou um único enfoque, pelo contrário, surgiu um leque de posições às vezes muito divergentes. Ecologistas radicais, ecologistas moderados, neomalthusianos, ambientalistas etc. refletiam uma forma diferente de ver a relação entre a sociedade e a natureza. Porém, a maioria deles concordava que o marxismo tinha uma abordagem produtivista, semelhante à dos cornucopianos (defensores de uma abundância e progresso ilimitado) alheia às necessidades de uma relação mais harmônica com a natureza.
