| Summary: | Based on a specific case study - the statue of María Remedios del Valle, inaugurated in November 2022 in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina and completely destroyed in September 2023 - this article reflects on statues as evidence of the historical cultures that created them, weaving the relationships between monuments and social memory. Within the recent past, the urban and social significance of statues has once again come under dispute – whether in attacks on statues within the broader movement of urban fallism, or in promoting the eternalization of once subordinated figures. In the specific case of statues that portray women, the inflection of gender - and, in many cases, race – reveals claims to visibility and, at the same time, heroicization of certain agents in spite of others. |
