| Summary: | This article analyzes the meanings attributed to the practice of drag queen performance, based on the results of the research Mapping Transformist Art in the Federal District and Surroundings, conducted between 2021 and 2022. Through the prosopography of forty transformist artists from the metropolitan area of the Federal District, we examine their motivations and the relationships they establish between their artistic practices and their sexual identities. The study reveals how bodily expressions, often ridiculed during childhood and adolescence, are re-signified and transformed into forms of aesthetic consecration, made possible by the process of “autonomization” and “ratification” of transformism. We demonstrate how various social agents contribute to legitimizing transformist art as a specific language of a social group. |
