| Summary: | Fat cattle is the name given to cattle “ready for slaughter”. In 1987, the Bolsa Mercantil & de Futuros began to market a “future contract” (for purchase and sale) of the animal as an instrument of “protection” against fluctuations in its price and profit from “speculation” in relation to this value. The objective of this text is to analyze the history of the creation of this financial contract, marked by the construction of belief in its effectiveness, as a means of protection and speculation, through a process similar to that of the production of belief in the effectiveness of magic. |
