Description
Summary:The recurrence of situations of work in conditions analogous to slavery denounces the anachronism of contemporary labor relations in Brazil. The 2003 National Plan for the Eradication of Slave Labor (PNETE) is a watershed in the field of public policies aimed at tackling this anachronism. Although the seriousness of the problem is, from time to time, denounced in the media and recognized by official bodies, a more forceful confrontation is still required, including in the symbolic dimension, in order to effectively combat the discourses and practices that are still misaligned with the human rights proclaimed in the ILO directives and in the treaties ratified by the country. This article makes a multidimensional and integrated analysis of the public policies to combat contemporary slavery implemented in the state of Sao Paulo in recent decades, with a focus on agribusiness. The article assesses the problems and difficulties faced in implementing the actions derived from the PNETE, as well as possible strategies for overcoming the obstacles to the eradication of degrading forms of overexploitation of labor.
