Description
Summary:The purpose of the article is to analyze austerity in contemporary Brazilian economic development, considering it as a central dimension of the social question, highlighting its economic and social implications in this country. In this context, the paper presents three central arguments: the origin of the austerity problem still relates back to the fiscal and financial crisis of the State in the 1980s, which had its origins in the financing of the government plans of authoritarian regimes; after the authoritarian regime, the discussion of austerity was renewed by the supremacy of the markets in the neoliberal era, imposing severe limits on the consolidation of the welfare commitments and the reduction of social inequalities assumed in the 1988 Brazilian Constitution; that there are theoretical alternatives in economic heterodoxy against austerity, underlining that such measures have not balanced the public debt and intensify the social question, so the choices of economic policy, especially fiscal policy, will define the national project that is intended for the future.
