Description
Summary:This article examines the career of the decorative painter Fernando Schlatter (1870–1949), who was active in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, during the early decades of the twentieth century. Drawing on personal documents, newspaper articles from A Federação (RS), and specialized scholarship, the study explores Schlatter’s recognition by his contemporaries and, more specifically, the subsequent erasure of his memory and portions of his work from Brazilian art historiography. The research seeks to reposition Schlatter within both the regional and national artistic landscapes, emphasizing the significance of the decorative arts in shaping Brazilian cultural and identity construction during the Republican period.
