| description | This text is a historical analysis of the relationship between prostitution and the (in)disciplining of bodies and spaces in the urban configuration of the city of Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará, between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th one. Throughout these decades, we’ve had emerged discourses and practices that made meretricious behaviour a problem for the urban, social, and moral organisation of the city, which also came to be described, thought about, and disputed from the point of view of sexual morality. This was a period in which attempts were made to regulate and control existences and behaviours considered inappropriate and deviant in relation to the norms in force and a model of what a civilised and modern society would be. The individuals and groups marked and stigmatised with the images and profiles of these ‘deviants’ were the objects of the attempts at repression and segregation that were being organised and institutionalised. It was in this context that the prostitute appeared as one of the figures in this gallery of social outcasts and prostitution began to be talked about and defined as a threat and a danger to the ‘good customs’ of the capital of Ceará. |

Este texto es un análisis histórico de las relaciones entre prostitución y (in)disciplina de cuerpos y espacios en la configuración urbana de la ciudad de Fortaleza, capital de Ceará, entre finales del siglo XIX y la primera mitad del siglo XX. A lo largo de estas décadas surgieron discursos y prácticas que hicieron del semáforo rojo un problema en el ordenamiento urbano, social y moral de la ciudad, que también comenzó a ser descrito, pensado y cuestionado desde el punto de vista de la moral sexual. Este fue un período en el que se intentó regular y controlar existencias y comportamientos considerados inapropiados y desviados en relación con las normas y un modelo de lo que sería una sociedad civilizada y moderna. Los individuos y grupos marcados y estigmatizados con las imágenes y perfiles de estas “desviaciones” fueron objeto de los intentos de represión y segregación que se estaban organizando e institucionalizando. Fue en ese contexto en el que la prostituta apareció como una de las figuras de esa galería de marginados sociales y comenzó a hablarse de la prostitución y a definirse como una amenaza y un peligro para las “buenas costumbres” de la capital de Ceará. Este texto é uma análise histórica sobre as relações entre prostituição e (in)disciplinamento de corpos e espaços na configuração urbana da cidade de Fortaleza, capital do Ceará, entre o final do século XIX e a primeira metade do século XX. Ao longo dessas décadas, emergiram discursos e práticas que fizeram do meretrício um problema do ordenamento urbano, social e moral da cidade, que também passou a ser descrita, pensada e disputada do ponto de vista da moralidade sexual. Esse foi um período em que se tentava regular e controlar as existências e os comportamentos considerados inadequados e desviantes em relação às normas e a um modelo do que seria uma sociedade civilizada e moderna. Os indivíduos e os grupos marcados e estigmatizados com as imagens e os perfis desses “desvios” eram objetos das tentativas de repressão e segregação que estavam sendo organizadas e institucionalizadas. Foi nesse contexto em que a prostituta apareceu como uma das figuras dessa galeria de párias sociais e a prostituição passava a ser falada e definida como uma ameaça e um perigo aos “bons costumes” da capital cearense.
