Sumario:The probability that an individual will have access to a given benefit is conditioned by circumstances over which the individual has no control. Several studies have employed logit models to estimate the likelihood of obtaining a particular benefit as a function of these circumstances, subsequently measuring the inequality in the distribution of the expected number of beneficiaries. This is a measure of the inequality of opportunity in accessing the benefit. We show that the inequality measure commonly used in this context corresponds to the maximum discrepancy of a Lorenz curve, and we propose the adoption of a Gini index, a measure of inequality that satisfies the Pigou-Dalton condition. We analyse the opportunities for access to higher education in Brazil from 2004 to 2024, revealing an upward trend in the average probability of access and a downward trend in the inequality of opportunity.
