Description
Summary:This article addresses the key trends and challenges facing trade unionism in Portugal, with an emphasis on the first quarter of the 21st century. It examines changes in the unions’ capacity for organization and mobilization, their institutional bargaining power, and tripartite consultation, as well as their relationships with social movements. The retrospective analysis also considers trade union identities, strategies, and orientations, and how these have shaped their priorities and responses. Finally, it frames the debate on the future of trade unions in Portugal in light of the “four possible futures” suggested by Visser for the next two decades: gradual marginalization; dualization of union representation and policies; replacement; and revitalization.
