| Summary: | Timon of Phlius’ Philosophenspott represents a revival of Greek comic models for philosophical purposes. In this sense, Timon’s criticism, carried out through the stratagems of comedy, aims to demolish other philosophies. This criticism acts as a counterpoint to the philosophy of Pyrrho of Elis, which Timon openly defends. In this contribution, I will demonstrate how Timon’s satire, which starts from the concept of Pyrrhonean anti-dogmatism, exploits the tools of comic Philosophenspott to defend its own philosophy, namely Pyrrhonism. Through a close reading of Timon’s fragments and a selected comparison with the stylistic repertory of Old Comedy, this article offers a unified interpretation of the Silloi as the interplay of a polemical pars destruens and an encomiastic pars construens, thereby clarifying their specifically Pyrrhonian import. |
