Sumario:Initially, the Center of Brazilian Sign Language Translators and Interpreters (TISL) serves deaf students enrolled in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). The Center’s establishment is in line with the inclusion policy supported by official documents, which aims at providing a favorable linguistic learning environment to deaf people, acknowledging their linguistic uniqueness. Such uniqueness requires the mediation of Brazilian Sign Language interpreters, who translate into the deaf people’s natural language the scientific knowledge being presented in class, offering these students the opportunity to actually learn the subjects discussed. Thus, the Center’s objective is to assure that the university is actually a place for the education of everyone, allowing deaf people not only to be admitted as students, but mostly to be able to keep attending the classes and to conclude their studies.
