description The use of mathematics is an activity present on human beings' routine, in order to quantify, value and communicate through numbers. The Problem Solving is one, among many ways, that Children's Education teacher can provide to small children, with the purpose of building complex and logical notions. In this context, the work purpose was to check the mathematic construction in small children under the Problem Solving Methodology, described by Smole, Diniz and Cândido and Mantovani de Assis. This methodology involves simple activities, which aim to involve the children's complete logical capacity, for example, searching alternatives and surveying hypothesis for a difficulty emerging during the class routine; encourage orality and the element description; present make-believe and cooperation games, among other possibilities. This work was carried out in children aged 5 and 6 years old, who attend Children's Education at Child Interaction and Education Center (CECI - Unicamp). As results, it was obtained that the methodology using Problem Solving provided the constitution of complex mathematic concepts in a playful and pleasing way, as well as the learning in an effective way, since students presented understanding and construction of logical mathematic structures. Finally, this methodology provided small children with self-confidence, freedom of choice, of thinking, of narrating, of criticizing, and involving with numbers.

Situações problemas. Educação infantil. The use of mathematics is an activity present on human beings' routine, in order to quantify, value and communicate through numbers. Finally, this methodology provided small children with self-confidence, freedom of choice, of thinking, of narrating, of criticizing, and involving with numbers.
